September Yard, Garden & Plant Tips
Shrubs and trees
1.  Work on a plan for fall planting of trees and shrubs.
2.  Berries on hollies and beautyberry are beginning to show color.
3.  Ornamental grasses add fall interest to the landscape.
Perennials, annuals and bulbs
1.  Purchase bulbs for October planting.
2.  Cut flowers for air-drying like cockscomb and gomphrena.
3.  Sow biennial flower seeds or set out young plants now; they will come up this fall, and then blossom next year.
Fruits and vegetables
1.  Harvest onions and garlic when the tops fall over.
2.  Continue to plant cool-season vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, and broccoli.
3.  Harvest apples and muscadines as soon as they ripen.
Lawn
1.  Test lawn and garden soil and apply lime as necessary.
2.  Reseed fescues and perennial ryegrass.
Houseplants
1.  Bring in potted plants to over-winter indoors.  Be sure to check for pests.
2.  Check all houseplants that have been outside and repot if necessary.
Odds and ends
1.  If you are interested in becoming a Master Gardener, call the Extension office.  In Sevier County (TN) call 453‑3695 for information.
2.  Fertilize warm and cool season grasses.
3.  Yellow jackets are very active this time of the year; be aware of nesting areas as you     garden.
4.  Despite our best efforts some plants look beyond repair.  Replace them with potted chrysanthemum.
